Why use a jumbo washer?
Home washers cram a comforter into a small drum, which prevents the feathers from moving freely. That leaves detergent trapped in the fill and can damage the machine's suspension. Our jumbo commercial washers hold a king comforter with room to tumble, so it comes out evenly cleaned every time.
What you'll need
- Down or synthetic comforter
- Mild liquid detergent (skip powder for down)
- 2 to 3 clean tennis balls or wool dryer balls
- About $10 in quarters and roughly 2 hours
Step by step
- Inspect and pre-treat. Check the care label and spot treat stains with a dab of detergent before loading.
- Load a jumbo washer. Drop the comforter in loosely so it can tumble. Never force it into a small machine.
- Use a gentle cycle. Delicate or bedding cycle, warm water, and a small amount of mild liquid detergent.
- Add an extra rinse. Trapped soap weighs feathers down and causes clumping.
- Dry low and slow. Move to a large dryer on low heat with tennis or dryer balls. Plan for 60 to 90 minutes and pause halfway to fluff.
- Confirm it is fully dry. Any dampness can mildew. Run another short cycle if needed before folding.
Pro tips
- Wash your down comforter once or twice a year. Use a duvet cover in between.
- Balance the drum: pair your comforter with a similar item, or run it solo in the jumbo.
- Never dry clean down at home. Heat and solvents can strip the natural oils.
