Common Laundry Stains: What to Do Before Washing

A stain is not a signal to turn every dial to maximum. The best first move is to identify the fabric, read its label and act while the mark is still fresh. Different stains need different treatments.

Start with the care label and a gentle check

Find out whether the item can be washed and which products its label allows. Test a treatment on an inconspicuous area where the product instructions advise it. If you cannot identify the fabric or the garment needs professional cleaning, avoid a home remedy that might worsen the damage.

Deal with residue before pretreating

Remove loose material gently rather than rubbing it deeper into the fabric. Follow a stain specific reference for the next step. Food, oil, ink and blood do not all respond to the same method, so a universal hot water recipe is not a reliable plan.

Use products according to their directions

Choose a pretreatment that is suitable for the fabric and stain, and follow its contact time and washing instructions. Do not mix laundry chemicals. Household cleaning products are not automatically appropriate for clothing, and more product does not guarantee a better result.

Check the stain before the dryer

After washing, look at the stained area before applying dryer heat. The American Cleaning Institute advises not drying until the stain is gone. If it remains, follow the relevant treatment guidance again or consult a cleaner, rather than assuming a hot dryer will finish the job.

Bring only what you need to the laundromat

Pretreat at home when practical, then transport products in their original closed containers. Keep them separate from snacks and children’s belongings. At a self serve laundromat, you choose the treatment and settings; the machine does not identify a stain or decide what is safe for your garment.
